Colorblind

Hey everyone, I recently stumbled across this post on my friend Mfon’s blog. I have wanted to address this topic for a while, but have been unsure of where to start. I’ve heard stories from friends who have been personally affected by prejudice and it makes me sad that so many judge on the basis of race/ethnicity. We’re all created in God’s image and all deserve to be treated that way. I love the message of this post and I hope you’re as moved by this post as I was when I read it.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.“~ John 13:34 (NKJV)

When my son, Eric, was 12 years old, he fell in love (for the second time.)  Her name was Jasmyn.  I will never forget the day he came home from school and began to tell me all about this beautiful girl that he met.  She was smart…and pretty…and funny… and kind… He went on and on about her that day and for many days to come.

At one point, Eric invited Jasmyn to the house to play video games and I offered to pick her up.  We pulled in front of her home and out came this beautiful young lady, just as pretty as Eric had described.  The thing that I found most interesting is that at no time in any of…

Thirty Day Blogging Challenge: Day 10

Note: This is not the “best” vacation that I have ever had, but it was by far the most interesting. For your entertainment, I have decided to write about this particular vacation.

wpid-blogging-challenge

It was between sophomore and junior year. I had high expectations.

My family and I had made plans to go to Tennessee and stay at my grandparents mountain house for a vacation. All of my cousins were going as well, and we were all going to stay in one house together. Prior to this trip, I had seen a couple of movies about country towns. I was ready to visit a nice little neighborhood like the one in the film Sweet Home Alabama! Little did I know, mountain houses and small towns are worlds apart.

We left extremely early in the morning, and made the entire distance by car. It was my very first road trip, complete with a Leanne Rimes CD that we replayed a fair number of times. The trip started out exciting, but soon lost momentum after the first five or six hours in a car…

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we arrived in the mountains of Tennessee. As we drove up the mountains, I was confronted head-on with my fear of heights…right below us were rocks that could fatally destroy us if we fell upon them. Thankfully, we made it up the mountain safe and sound and lived to tell the story of what would end up being a very interesting trip.

We arrived at my grandparents house around 5:00. By then, we were all pretty worn out from the trip, but our family kept us on our feet. My cousins (ranging in age from three to twelve) showed me around the property, and within the first hour there, we ran into a slight problem…WASPS!

442eecb5b9d812c42f7a89ba8d383fa2

We stumbled upon a nest, and like a plague straight out of Exodus, we were chased by wasps! I grabbed one of my youngest cousins’ hand and instructed all of my cousins to run, feeling responsible as the oldest. Unfortunately, two of my cousins got stung anyway.

Now, one thing that you need to know about this place is that there was no hospital (Or civilization) for a good hour or two. We were in no-man’s-land. Thus, we relied solely on the allergy medicine in my mom’s purse and the limited first aid kit owned by our family. No one was too badly hurt, but their bites both swelled up frighteningly large.

Finally, after all of the chaos had calmed down, and after my cousins were feeling better, we sat down in front of the TV and watched some movie on Disney Channel. It was only the first day and I was already exhausted. I knew that with danger lurking around the corner, I had to watch my back (And watch my cousins, too).

That night, I planned to watch some television on my own after everyone had gone to bed. I brought my computer and my earbuds, but soon found out that the house had no wifi! Absolutely none! That meant that for three days, I couldn’t watch go on youtube, check my emails, or surf the web! We couldn’t even text or use cell phones!

Thus, I went on a wifi fast for the next three days. On day two of the trip, my family decided to go into town for the day to look at some of the shops. After all, what could possibly go wrong?

Well, as it turned out the town that we had stumbled upon enjoys having parades in the middle of the road. A Fourth of July parade blocked the main road that we needed to drive through to get to the shops. I have never seen anything like this in my life. A parade blocking a main road? This simply does not happen in the suburbs!

Happy Fourth of July from China Grove, Alabama

Finally, we managed to find a way around the parade and somehow, found our way to the shops! I was very happy to be in civilization again. I discovered on that vacation that the middle-of-nowhere is not my cup of tea.

The trip to the shops went fairly well. Nothing too crazy happened there. Although about halfway through, I realized that I wasn’t feeling well. After a couple more hours of hanging with my cousins, I knew I needed to retire to a bed and lie down. I was starting to get symptoms of the flu. I was shaky, I had a stomachache, and I felt completely and utterly exhausted. Thus, I crashed front of a small portable car-ride-TV that my family had brought to binge-watch The Middle.

Even though it was Forth of July, the weather was freezing! I slept in a winter parka that night to keep warm, overtop of a long-sleeve shirt! Though we were in Tennessee, it felt a lot like Antarctica. It was by far the weirdest weather that I have ever experienced on Fourth of July.

The next morning, our trip to the mountains came to a close. We ate breakfast, said goodbye to our family, and headed home. And, I soon found that a home complete with wifi and neighbors close by is a happy home. 😃

*Note: For those of you reading this who don’t live in America, it isn’t all as crazy as the town depicted in this post.

Thirty Day Blogging Challenge: Day 9

wpid-blogging-challenge

Hey everyone, it’s day-number-nine of the thirty day blogging challenge (I really need to come up with some better openings for these challenges…)! After some pretty deep and thought provoking questions, today is a more fun/quirky one…what’s in my bag?

In this post, you’ll find out just how disorganized I really am! I may struggle with OCD, but that OCD doesn’t always translate into organization! In other words, I really need to clean out my purse before college…

So, without further ado, here are the objects in my purse!

1. A Winnie the Pooh and cross thingamajig that a friend made for me a year ago: The Winnie the Pooh one used to have a nose but it came off. I’m pretty sure these are supposed to be keychains, but since I don’t have a car, I’ve  just used them as decor for my bag.

IMG_0907.jpg

2. More pens and pencils than I know what to do with: Seriously, I should do a free pen giveaway on this blog. Although shipping them might get a little tricky… 😜

IMG_0908

3. Two notebooks: One is the Gators because my family is a fan of the team. The other is just a decorative one with designs and my initial.

IMG_0910

4. Lots of random papers and old receipts that honestly just need to go: When my backpack got too full during the school year, I often shoved papers into my purse. Probably not the wisest thing to do in retrospect, but I survived in the midst of the disorganization!

IMG_0911.jpg

5. Shades: Because it is way too hot and sunny where I live.

IMG_0912

6. Hand sanitizer: Yes, one of them is Christmas themed. No, I am not ashamed.

IMG_0915

7. Wallets: Nothing too interesting to say here. I got them both as gifts which is why there are two.

IMG_0918

8. A graduation card and a thank you card. Confession. I have a graduation card that my whole class signed that I still haven’t given to my best friend. I really need to do that next time I see her. Sorry Alex!

IMG_0916

And lastly…the bag! I’ll be back tomorrow with a vacation story!

Thirty Day Blogging Challenge: Day 8

wpid-blogging-challenge

Hey everyone, I hope y’all are having a good morning! Today is day-number-eight of the blogging challenge (Still going strong!) and the topic this morning is ‘Five current goals.’ I’ve been thinking about this one for a couple of days now, and I’ve finally managed to come up with some!

  1. Get back into the Word-Sadly, I’ve been horrible about reading my Bible this summer. Though I have more time on my hands than I know what to do with, I haven’t necessarily used it wisely. I’ve ended up spending my time scrolling through my Twitter feed and completely forgetting to read the Bible. I plan to get back to faithfully reading it today. Perhaps committing to this in writing will serve as a good reminder to myself.
  2. Continue to work towards my goal of making it as a writer-Aside from the writing that I do on this blog, I have a fiction series that I’ve been working on since Freshman year. Obviously my writing has evolved a good deal since I was fourteen, so there have been plenty of revisions over the years. Currently, I’m revising book #1 and I’m almost finished. My goal is to finish it before summer ends.
  3. Have a successful first semester of college-This is going to be my first year of college, which also means my first step into adulthood and my first time in a secular school. I don’t quite know what to expect, but I know that God has a plan for this chapter and I’m going to trust that He’ll lead and guide me through this step. I plan to stay on top of schoolwork and work hard towards my degree.
  4. Enjoy the last remnants of summer-Admittedly, I’ve kind of been facing summer boredom lately, but I want to enjoy this break before it ends. I’m not going to have this kind of free time much longer, and I need to use this break as a sabbatical and rest before the crazy kicks in (Yes, I got that line from Francesca Battistelli). Before I know it, it’s going to be term papers and tests, so I need to make the most of summer while I have it!
  5. Trust God with the future-I’m honestly not sure what the future holds, but I know that God does. As much as I tend to want to know what I’m doing and when, I kind of need to accept that I don’t know the future. Unfortunately, I can’t travel twenty years into the future like Michael J. Fox did in Back To The Future. But, I can trust the one who holds my future. He has all of it figured out, even when I don’t.

For all of you still following me on this challenge, here’s a slice of cake! 🍰

Thanks for sticking with me! You guys are awesome!

Thirty Day Blogging Challenge: Day 7

wpid-blogging-challenge

Happy Sunday everyone! I can’t believe it’s already been a week of the thirty day challenge! Today’s post is about my five favorite songs! Because I have so many favorite songs, I decided to narrow it down to my top five at the moment. So, without further ado, here’s my playlist!

  • Fight Song by Rachel PlattenI think this will forever be one of my favorites! It’s super inspiring and makes you feel like you can take on the world! It’s a classic power pop anthem, right up there with Stronger by Kelly Clarkson. The chorus is awesome, but the lyrics in the intro are probably my favorite part. “Like a small boat on the ocean sending big waves into motion. Like how a single word can make a heart open. I may only have one match but I can make an explosion.
  • Hanging By A Moment by LifehouseI absolutely love the meaning and depth of this song! To me, it seems to be a heartfelt prayer from a new or returning Christian. It has an amazing rawness to the lyrics and I can feel the honesty seep through in the words.”Forgetting all I’m lacking completely incomplete, I’ll take your invitation, you take all of me” is probably one of my favorite lines.
  • The God I Know by Love & The OutcomeI love this song both as a perfectionist and as someone who likes upbeat Christian music! This song tackle the topic of trying hard to be good enough, but then realizing that God is enough and we’re saved only by Him. If you’ve read my review of Grace For The Good Girl, you’ll easily see how this song resonates with me. Plus, you can’t not get pulled in by the catchy ear worms in the chorus. “I can throw my hands up, worries down! I remember when He showed me how to break up with my doubts, once I was lost but now I’m found! No strings attached when He saved my soul, want you to know the God I know. Oh! You gotta know! Oh! The God I know!
  • Empty Me (The acoustic sessions) by Jeremy CampI re-found this song (Along with a whole bunch of old Jeremy Camp songs) recently and I’ve been listening to it a lot! It’s very chill and I love the unplugged sound of it. It repeats pretty much the same lyrics throughout the whole song, but somehow, he makes it work. “Holy fire burn away my desire for anything that is not of you and is of me. I want more of you
And less of me.” Plus, there’s no denying that he had some pretty awesome hair in this video. 😂
  • You And Me by Lifehouse-This song also has a nice acoustic sound to it. It’s a really sweet love song with an early 2000s vibe and it has a great music video! My favorite lines are probably “All of the things that I want to say just aren’t coming out right. I’m tripping on words, you’ve got my head spinning, I don’t know where to go from here.” Haven’t we all been there before? That literally describes every crush ever.

I hope you like my playlist! I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section. I’ll be back tommorow with my top five current goals; wish me luck!

Thirty Day Blogging Challenge: Day 6

wpid-blogging-challenge

I once saw an insightful tweet that read “I’m not afraid of heights, I’m afraid of falling.”

This is pretty much sums up my fear of heights. Every time I’m on a high peak, there’s always that distinct realization in the back of my mind that I could fall…something that would not be pleasant and would likely be fatal.

I’ve pretty much had this fear for as long as I can remember. From the time I was a little girl, I’ve always been a tad wary of walking too close to the edge on the second story of the local mall. Even though there’s fairly tall railing, I somehow manage to come up with the worst possible scenarios where that wouldn’t be of help. What if someone violently bumps into me? Or what if I loose my balance and somehow flip over it? Crazy, I know, but this is a peak into the inside of my very OCD brain…

This is also the reason that I’ve never been on a roller coaster. I came very close when I was at Disney World with friends at age thirteen, but I backed out at the last second. Going rapidly upside-down and side-to-side about fifty feet off the ground? The nightmare of anyone afraid of heights! And, I pretty much panicked when I walked up to the top of a lighthouse on a family vacation. The wind blew fiercely and I was convinced that it was going to knock me right over the side (Yes, there were ropes, but that isn’t a convincing argument to my brain)!

Nonetheless, I would like to conquer this fear…at least a little bit. My best friend and I both mentioned riding a roller coaster together someday, conquering our united fear of those death machines! I don’t know when this will be, as I rarely go to theme parks, but I plan to ride one someday! I’ll be sure to update y’all when it happens. Until then, the lighthouse and the second story of the mall continue to be my most impressive feat of facing my fear of heights.

Thirty Day Blogging Challenge: Day 5

wpid-blogging-challenge

Hey everyone, I’m a little late, but I made it! I had a Bible study with some of my friends today and we celebrated two birthdays, so that’s why this post is coming later than the last four. Today’s topic is about my proudest moment.

Truth is, I’ve been very blessed and have had a lot of really awesome moments, so I decided to narrow it down to my top three proudest ones!

  1. When I saw my first book in print. I was only about thirteen when this happened. I felt the Lord calling me to write a teen devotional drawing parallels between the struggles Biblical figures faced and modern day problems that people encounter, so I sat down at my computer and began typing. After a lot of hard work, I managed to find a publisher and earn enough money to self publish it. It was an incredible feeling to see something that I wrote in print and I’m very grateful for that opportunity.
  2. When I sang a song that I wrote in a talent show. From the time that I was a freshman in high school, I had a dream to sing one of my songs on stage, and October of my senior year, that dream came true! It was a great feeling and I’ll always remember that night. I wrote about it in detail here.
  3. When I won a Liebster award. A couple of months back, I was nominated for a Liebster by my good friend Mfon from Dainty M. It was super exciting to win an award and be acknowledged for my writing. Plus, the feedback from all of you has inspired me to keep pushing forward and posting new content. I’m very excited to see what God leads me to write in the future.😊

I can’t believe that I’m already on day five of the challenge, I hope y’all stay with me until the end! 🏃

Thirty Day Blogging Challenge: Day 4

wpid-blogging-challenge

Guess what guys ? It’s day four of the blogging challenge! Today’s topic will be…my dream job!

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve loved stories. I begged my mom to teach me how to read when I only three years old and from that point, I haven’t stopped. When I was little, it was board books. When I got a little older, it was chapter books. Now, I’ve moved on to novels and blog posts.

But, I didn’t just love reading stories, I loved telling them too. When I was a child, I used to enjoy playing pretend with my dolls and stuffed animals. After school, I would frequently disappear into my room, which in my mind was a transport to another land far, far away. Pretty soon, I discovered the ‘power of the pen’ and wrote short stories with a pencil and paper. I illustrated a “cover” and stapled the pages together. Those were my earliest days of writing.

I moved to the computer eventually (After taking the ever dreaded typing class), and I’ve been typing up stories since I was about eleven years old. I self-published two nonfiction books (Teen Impact and Know Jesus Know Peace) during my younger teenage years and am currently working on a fiction series that I hope to publish. I have also moved onto other mediums of writing-namely blogging and writing song lyrics while still staying true to my first love: Books.

As you probably figured out, my dream job is to become a successful writer. I’ve had that dream since I was a little girl and it’s persisted into adulthood. I’ve grown in my craft through writing this blog and also through the blogs of others (Shoutout to all my blog friends!). I don’t know my future holds, but I do know that God holds my future in His hands. Thus, as I continue this journey into college and a future career, I’m going to trust God and continue sharing my random thoughts with my awesome, faithful readers and through blogging. 😉

So how about you guys? What is your dream job? Feel free to post your answers in the comment section!

Thirty Day Blogging Challenge: Day 3

wpid-blogging-challenge

I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” C. S. Lewis

I have a lot of favorite quotes-some by classic authors, some by modern writers, and some by well known public figures. Nonetheless, I have decided that for today’s post, I’m going to write about the above quote by C.S. Lewis. I love his metaphors used and the meaning behind the quote.

Plus, C.S. Lewis is just awesome.

In this post, Lewis makes the point that our faith determines our actions; how we think inevitably affects the way that we live. If we believe that there is no God, that means that there is no such thing as absolute truth and by default, no absolute meaning to life. Nonetheless, if we do believe in God, we’re called to live in a way that honors Him and make our lives here count. The earth we live in isn’t all there is, but the decisions that we make have eternal consequences (e.g.. To follow God or not follow Him).

Our beliefs shape how we see the world; this is called our worldview. It is the shining light that guides our thoughts, words, and actions. When a person is truly committed to their faith, it is bound to show in their life. The personal testimonies of those around us provide some of the strongest evidence for God’s existence. What else could change a hardcore drug addict to a committed Christian? What else could give that young single mother hope to keep going and raise her child? What else could drive the bar-hopper from the local club to the local church?

As amazed as we are when we hear stories like these, simple stories of faithfulness can be just as moving.

The timid person who finds the courage to speak up about their faith.

The person who battles temptation but finds the strength and courage to resist.

The person who has seen less-than-perfect-attitudes in fellow believers, but continues to have faith in God and their brothers and sisters in Christ.

How we live our lives doesn’t just affect how people see us, but how they see God. We all have stories that have affected our lives, and we’re called to be a living testimony for those around us. 2 Corinthians 5:20 even goes so far as to call us Christ’s ambassadors. We cannot see the full picture of our lives on this earth, but God does. Through our relationships, work, and calling, God wants to reveal His love for the world. We all have different talents, personalities, and situations, but if we believe in Jesus and accept Him into our heart, we’re all part of one giant spiritual family. We are called to keep adding to this family. We are called to be salt and light. We are called to show the world who God is through our lives and actions. We may not be able to see God, but we can see His presence in the lives of others and in our own lives. Though we are currently earth-bound, we can feel rays of the sun from above, signaling it’s presence in our lives. And, we are called to share that light in the midst of the dark around us.

I’d love to hear your stories in the comments! How has the faith of another person helped you grow in your own faith?
